PHS23 Interpret research findings and implement them in practice

Overview

This standard covers interpreting research findings and implementing them in practice. Users of this standard will need to ensure that practice reflects up to date information and policies. Version No 1

Knowledge and Understanding

You will need to know and understand:

1. turning complex research outcomes into information and knowledge that can be used to improve health and wellbeing
2. identifying steps for the implementation of recommendations based on research where this is appropriate and possible, including the involvement of stakeholders in the research process
3. presentation skills in relation to a range of different audiences and in different contexts
4. planning the application of research findings to improve a specific area of practice
5. evaluating and reviewing research-based implementation for the improvements made to practice
6. applying influencing and negotiation skills to work with stakeholders on implementing research findings in practice
7. effective project management and support skills in the implementation of research findings

Performance Criteria

You must be able to do the following:

1. identify, select and summarise in a suitable format relevant and current qualitative and quantitative information about knowledge and practice and disseminate it appropriately
2. provide information to individuals and groups in relevant contexts and present it at a pace, and in a style and form, which is appropriate to their needs
3. provide opportunities for recipients to ask questions, seek clarification and give feedback
4. reach agreements with stakeholders about implementing research in practice which strike the best balance between
1. improving health and wellbeing
2. the issues and concerns of those with an interest in implementation
3. available resources
4. national priorities and strategies
5. propose and agree courses of action
1. focused on the purpose and intended outcomes of implementation
2. that limit any obstacles
3. detail who is to do what and by when
6. communicate action plans in a style and form appropriate to those who are to implement them following agreement from those concerned
7. provide the appropriate level and type of support for implementation
8. monitor and review implementation against anticipated outcomes and make any necessary adjustments with the agreement of stakeholders
