PHS22 Appraise, plan and manage research related to improving health and wellbeing

Overview

This standard covers appraising, planning and managing research related to improving health and wellbeing. Users of this standard will need to ensure that practice reflects up to date information and policies. Version No 1

Knowledge and Understanding

You will need to know and understand:

1. developments in knowledge and practice related to improving health and wellbeing.
2. how to identify clear aims and objectives for a research project.
3. how to turn a complex problem related to improving health and wellbeing into questions and hypotheses that are capable of research.
4. how to turn complex research outcomes into information and knowledge that can be used to improve health and wellbeing.
5. how to design, contribute to and conduct research.
6. drawing appropriate conclusions, set in context, and make recommendations from the results of own and others’ research.
7. appraising the ethical and confidentiality issues arising in research and propose how to manage such issues effectively.
8. applying project management skills to the management of research projects.
9. appraising the validity and reliability of a range of quantitative and qualitative research studies related to improving health and wellbeing
10. appraising the extent to which research has been influenced by funders and commissioners and the effect of this on the current state of the knowledge base

Performance Criteria

You must be able to do the following:

1. appraise the validity, sufficiency and relevance of research methodologies for the contexts and questions
2. evaluate the outcomes of research to determine
1. the extent and limitations of current knowledge and practice
2. their scope, validity and reliability
3. the extent to which the coverage, focus, processes and findings are influenced by the agendas of those commissioning and funding it or others
4. whether the conclusions and recommendations are justifiable
5. their impact on and potential for improving health and wellbeing
6. their implications for collaborative working arrangements
3. determine priorities for research and development that are consistent with
1. current understandings
2. the extent and potency of uncertainties
3. the priorities of communities
4. collaborative working arrangements
4. identify stakeholders who need to be involved in the development and evaluation of research and develop with them clear research proposals that are consistent with identified priorities
5. present clear, succinct, valid, reliable and well-costed research proposals to appropriate organisations in ways which are likely to capture their interests, alerts them to ethical and confidentiality issues and encourages their support for the required resources
6. alert others to gaps in knowledge which need to be tackled
7. effectively manage research projects consistent with their agreed aims, objectives, methods, desired outcomes and ethical dimensions
8. collate, analyse and synthesise qualitative and quantitative research data and information using appropriate methods
9. effectively disseminate the results of research to appropriate others maintaining agreed levels of confidentiality
