Overview
This standard is about obtaining approval for selected research and development activities. This range of approvals will include organisational, regulatory, ethical and financial. This may involve utilising simple or complex processes to ensure that approval criteria are met. It is expected that the researcher will be able to implement processes relevant to the type and scale of research for which they have responsibility.
Users of this standard will need to ensure that practice reflects up to date information and policies.

- processes relating to approval for research and development activities
- practical and financial implications associated with research and development activities and methodologies
- sources of information regarding approval for research activities and how to access them
- factors affecting the ability of approval agencies and organisations to confirm acceptance
- relevant ethical considerations relating to approval of research and development projects and when to apply them
- relevant regulatory requirements in respect of research and development proposals.
- your organisation’s policy, strategy and objectives in respect of research and development approval processes
- the relevance of research governance framework
Performance Criteria
You must be able to do the following:
- satisfy local evaluation requirements and obtain approval
- conduct negotiations relating to the approval process in a constructive manner in line with relevant procedures
- support your requests for financial and other resources with full details and reasoned arguments
- reach agreements in line with relevant organisational, regulatory, financial and ethical requirements
- record agreements accurately
- process agreements to the next stage of implementation
- obtain approval from external bodies where required
