R&D11 Record conclusions and recommendations of research and development activities
Overview
This standard covers recording conclusions and recommendations of research and development activities. It may involve use of manual and computerised recording systems. The researcher may work alone or as part of a research team dependent on the scale of the research project.
Users of this standard will need to ensure that practice reflects up to date information and policies.

Knowledge and Understanding
You will need to know and understand:
- the nature and extent of the research plan
- methods for identifying relevant sources of information
- methods of capturing and storing information
- relevant ethical issues relating to access and use of information
- your organisation’s requirements in respect of documentation, access to and use of research results
- sources of expert advice, how to access and use them
- methods and techniques for presentation of information
- techniques for assessing the reliability and validity of research information
- the context in which the results will be used and its impact on the nature of the results needed
- the range of interpretive methods which could be used within the research programme
- the relevance of research governance framework
Performance Criteria
You must be able to do the following:
- ensure that records of research and development are full and complete
- record accurately all findings, results and views, in a suitable format for intended purpose and further use
- explain in full the rationale for conclusions drawn from results
- justify recommendations with reference to results
- ensure that records comply with relevant legal, ethical and organisational requirements
- establish and report on issues of copyright and intellectual property rights
